Violas
Steel Magnolia
The wisdom of Gasparo da Salo comes down to us again in the form of another small, 14 and 1/4 inch viola which has rescued a young professional who was on the verge of defeat as a musician. Its tone has wowed musicians at the Manhattan School and fooled listeners who thought it must be at least 16 and 1/2 inches. The top bout width is 7 and 7/8ths inches, center is 5 and 3/4ths inches, and bottom is 10 and 3/4ths inches. So, that gives the instrument the internal air space to generate a rich and powerful tone.
